How Our Rugs Are Made

Rugs brought to life
through knotting.

Rugs at World of Rugs USA are each handmade and crafted through a meticulous and time-honored process that often begins with the selection of only the highest quality materials. Artisans typically use natural fibers such as wool, silk, or cotton, which are dyed using natural vegetal dyes to achieve the desired colors. The rug’s base is created by threads on a loom and weaving other threads through them. This base is important for the rug’s strength and shape.

The actual design of the rug is brought to life through knotting. Each knot is a tiny part of the pattern, and the number of knots affects how detailed the rug looks. Once the knotting is complete, the rug is cut from the look and undergoes several finishing processes, including trimming the pile to an even height, washing to remove any impurities, and stretching to ensure the rug lies flat. This whole process can take months or even years, resulting in a unique piece of art.
